Modern was founded on the principle that great coffee is for everyone, every day.  When we opened shop in downtown Oakland in 2009, there were plenty of chains making “fast coffee”, but no one making quality drinks with quality ingredients. It quickly became evident that people working downtown yearned for a spot that felt like their neighborhood coffee shop, where they could get something special in the middle of the workday.

While a lot has changed since then - in the coffee industry (in general) and downtown Oakland (in particular) - our commitment to creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere and serving top quality drinks and treats remains the same.
